Week 3, Lesson 2
Wednesday 14th September - Component 1 (Language) lesson Classwork: we developed our understanding of translating the imperfect tense as 'used to' as well as 'was/were', then completed exercise 3.5 & 3.6 on page 63. Following this, we recapped our knowledge of the irregular verb 'to be', then began to recognise and form it in its imperfect tense. Click here for our lesson. Homework is to learn the first 20 words of the Devised Vocabulary List ('a/ab' to 'ancilla') for a vocab test next Wednesday. Remember to learn all parts, not just the meaning! |

Week 4, Wednesday 21st September
Language Lesson (there was no Monday lesson due to Public Holiday) We started with a vocabulary test, then recapped the Verb 'to be', completing an English to Latin exercise. We then were introduced to the irregular verb 'to be able' and completed an exercise, both found on the powerpoint. Homework: re-learn the 20 words of vocabulary if you did not pass the vocabulary test (you can find the vocab list on the page on this site) and learn the present tense and imperfect tenses of the verb 'to be' and their meanings for a test next Wednesday (28th). |

Week 6, Lesson 1
Monday 3rd October - Component 3 (Civilisation) lesson Classwork: A recap of the typical day in the life of a rich Roman man, by reading this sheet. An introduction to the 'paterfamilias' and the patron-client relationship followed by a worksheet. This included watching the video clip posted to the left. Homework: complete the questions based upon the two sources prescribed by the examination board. These can be found at the end of the introduction to the 'paterfamilias' notes above. |
Week 6, Lesson 2
Wednesday 5th October - Component 1 (Language) Today we started with our DVL Test 2, found here. We were then introduced to 10 new verbs to practise in Latin in both the present and imperfect tenses we have been learning recently. You can find the lesson notes here. We then completed exercises practising these verbs (Ex 3.13, 3.14, 3.15 & 3.16) on pages 69-70. Homework is to learn the irregular verbs 'to be' and 'to be able' from the past few weeks for a quiz next Wednesday (12th October). You should learn both the present and imperfect tenses for these. Week 7, Lesson 1
Monday 10th October - Component 2 (Literature) lesson Classwork: using this powerpoint, we looked at the 6 picture sources which the exam board could ask questions on. See the Component 2 page to click on each of the individual sources. We then used a visual source analysis sheet to analyse and evaluate each of the sources. To be finished at home for homework ready for the first Monday back after mid-term break (Monday 24th October). |

Week 7, Lesson 2
Wednesday 12th October - Component 1 (Language) In today's lesson we began with a test on both the irregular verb 'to be' in the present and imperfect tenses, followed by the irregular verb 'to be able' in both tenses, too. We then moved onto learning about direct commands, which we call imperatives, followed by a translation activity. Homework is to learn the next set of 20 words in theDevised Vocabulary List - ‘canis’ to ‘conficio’ - for a quiz after mid-term break on Wednesday 2nd November. |
Week 8, Lesson 1
Monday 24th October (Component 1 lesson) Today we swapped our lessons! Normally we do our language, component 1, lessons on Wednesdays, but as we had a bit of catching up to do from before the break, we switched over the lessons. We completed the translation of Aeneas and Creusa fleeing from the burning city of Troy, bringing together all of the language learning we have done so far in a translation passage (3.17, page 71 - 73). |

Week 8, Lesson 2
Wednesday 26th October (Component 3 lesson) Today we recapped our learning about Roman men before moving onto the daily routine for Roman women. We looked at what they wore, their priorities and status, and looked at the problem of bias in historical sources. Click here for the lesson notes. The homework task is to complete a diary entry for a day in the life of a Roman 'matron' using this worksheet. |

Week 10 Lesson 1 (Component 3 lesson - civilisation)
Monday 7th November After looking at the daily life of a rich Roman matron the week before last, our lesson today focused on the lack of evidence we have for women working outside of the domestic sphere (the home). After watching the video on the left here, we considered what image of women men (as they are the ones who wrote the sources) wanted to portray of women, and whether this meant women were restricted to living the lives of 'matronae', or whether they had other opportunities available to them. Click here for notes. Homework is to consider the source material on working Roman women that we have stuck into our books and to answer the questions accordingly. It is due next Wednesday (16th November), as Monday is a Public Holiday. |

Week 11 Lesson 1 (Component 1 lesson - language)
Wednesday 16th November We only had one Latin lesson this week due to Monday being a Public Holiday for Remembrance. Today we synthesised our learning through bringing all of our knowledge of grammar together to complete the translation of complex sentences in continuous passages of Latin prose, as we would need to do in the exam. Week 12 Lesson 1 (Component 1 lesson - Language)
Monday 21st November We have swapped our lessons round this week and next week, so there are both language lessons this week, and a literature and civilisation lesson next week. Note that we will still be having the Vocab test on Wednesday, despite this! Today our focus is on Adjective Agreements, specifically focusing on gender and declension. Homework is to ensure all exercises up to the end of 3.29 are completed for next Wednesday (30th), and remember to learn the vocabulary for this coming Wednesday (23rd)! |

Week 13 Lesson 1 (Component 3B lesson - Civilisation) - Yellow books!
Monday 28th November - Ms Steph out of school. Today our lesson focuses on domestic enslavement in the ancient Roman world. We are looking at how people became enslaved, the jobs they would do once they were enslaved, and what life for like in each of their respective roles. The powerpoint is in 3 parts due to its size. Click on each part to work through it: - Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3 Once you have written the date and LOs, you should read the powerpoint, watch the videos (posted below) when asked, and answer the questions in your book in full sentences. Week 13 Lesson 2 (Component 2 lesson - Literature) - Purple books!
Wednesday 30th November - Ms Steph out of school. Today our lesson focuses on notes to accompany the Cicero set text. These notes are a powerpoint and will save to your downloads folder when you open it, rather than open in a new tab. Once you have written the date, you should read the powerpoint, and answer the questions in your book in full sentences. You should finish for homework, as well as ensuring you have started to make your quizlet revision cards. If you have any additional time this should be spent completing your component 1 (pink book) work and component 3 (yellow book) work. On Monday (5th December) Ms Steph is collecting in ALL books to be marked and so these should be up to date by then. |

Monday 16th January
Today's lesson should have been a Component 2 (literature) lesson as we alternate Mondays between Component 2 and Component 3. However, there were only 2 students in today's class due to sickness and student absence, so we continued with exercises translating the perfect tense. Wednesday's lesson will introduce the next literature text to all students. Home learning - learn the verb table (present, imperfect and perfect tenses) for a quiz next Wednesday 25th January. |

We looked at the notes to Horace's 'Pleasures of Country Living' poem, discussed the ideas and themes, and then began to answer to content and style questions on these. We completed questions 1 & 2 in the lesson, so questions 3, 4 & 5 are set for homework for Monday (13th February). |
Wednesday 8th February 2023
Today's lesson was a Component 1 (Language) lesson. We continued our practice of the perfect tense with 10 Latin to English sentences (Ex 4.14) and 5 Stretch & Challenge English to Latin sentences (Ex 4.15). We then spent the rest of the time in the lesson completing our corrections and assessing previous exercises with our peers. Homework is to complete the translation story of 'Danger in Sicily' (Ex 4.16) for Monday (13th February) - Are Aeneas and his sailors in trouble again?! |

This lesson was a Component 3 (Civilisation) lesson. We continued exploring the topic of growing up as a child in Ancient Rome, examining coming of age rituals, and the differences in education for both girls and boys in Roman society. Click for the lesson notes, and also for the activities. |
Wednesday 15th March
In our lesson today Ms Steph gave back the feedback on the practice 4 mark exam questions we had written on Horace's poem 'The Pleasures of Country Living'. We used our green pens to amend, correct and extend our answers, developing them into more fluent and accurate examination responses using the feedback we received. |

Today's lesson was a Component 3 (Civilisation) lesson. We looked in closer detail at the 3 stages of a Roman boy's education, their teachers, the subjects that were taught, their equipment and the schoolroom itself. Today's lesson was a Component 2 (Literature) lesson. In today's lesson we started the next literature set text, another Horace: 'The Changing Face of the Countryside'. We wrote the translation and then answered content questions to help us to understand what Horace is writing about in the poem. These questions should be finished for homework for Monday 17th April (first day back after Easter). |

Today we revisited the Cicero text we began at the start of the school year. Now that we have developed our skills in analysing and evaluating the authors we have studied so far, we are going to add the notes to the Cicero text (which we initially just translated as we started our venture into Latin literature at the start of the year). This week we discussed the different types of questions that will come up in the examination: short answer (1-2 mark questions), 4-6 mark questions and then the one 12 mark question. This should be started today and then finished in the lesson on Wednesday. At the end of Monday's lesson, if you think you aren't going to finish the question in Wednesday's lesson then you must make sure you work on it for homework between Monday and Wednesday! |
